Championing carer-friendly workplaces as an occupational health & safety issue
Dr. Allison Williams, a professor at McMaster University, is spearheading efforts to bring attention to — and combat — the challenges faced by carer-employees (CEs), who are balancing paid work and unpaid caregiving responsibilities. These carer-employees (CEs) represent 1 in 4 Canadians and their number will only grow due to an increasing aging population which is living longer with multiple chronic conditions, requiring greater care demands.

Mindfulness and Its Applications in Mental Health
One notable study evaluated a mindfulness-based mobile health (mHealth) intervention among university students experiencing anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. This randomized controlled trial found that the mindfulness mHealth intervention significantly reduced anxiety compared to a social support-based control group. Both interventions showed promise in alleviating depressive symptoms, but mindfulness was particularly effective for anxiety management. Participants reported high levels of engagement and perceived benefits from the mindfulness program, indicating its feasibility and acceptability in a challenging context[1].
