It’s never the wrong moment for some Frida Kahlo-style decorating. The Mexican artist’s celebrated self-portraits, with their unique iconography of colourful costumes, landscapes and animals, have made an indelible impression on the popular consciousness, and they continue to influence designers across fashion and interiors decades after her death. The new exhibition Frida: The Making of an Icon at London’s Tate Modern (until 3 January 2027) traces her journey to becoming a cultural and commercial phenomenon, and has once again raised Kahlo-mania to fever pitch.
